Copywriting
My commercial copy has helped to sell audio recording equipment, computer hardware and software, books, magazines, CD-ROMs, musical instruments, accounting services, and more.
Effective copy begins with a clear understanding of
- the product or service on offer
- the needs and desires of the target audience
- the specific goal of the piece
After determining the scope and goal of the project, my first step is to learn as much as I can about the product and the audience. Next, I draft ideas to share with the client. After we agree on an approach, I produce the finished piece, revising as required.
My ongoing interest in this work comes from the challenge of putting "the best words in the best order" for the job at hand. Commercial copy, like every other kind of writing, requires careful attention to craft, critical thinking, and an ear that is alive to the rhythm and sense of language. My goal with every job is to deliver copy that is
- effective for the client's purposes
- appropriate for the audience
- clear, accurate, and compelling
- clutter-free
- structurally sound
- free of grammatical and mechanical errors
