About Mark Garvey

I am a writer and editor with more than twenty years of experience in the book publishing industry, where I acquired, developed, and published nonfiction books. I have also written nonfiction books and articles since the 1980s.

Today, I create and polish commercial copy for clients across a broad range of industries. For more about those services, see the Writing and Editing pages. To learn more about my background, read on.

My career in publishing was largely spent in acquiring and developing how-to, technical, and reference books. I hired authors and worked with them to create the best possible products for our markets. Below is a small sample of representative projects. As an editor, I have been involved in the creation of hundreds of books.

I edited and published many books about the technology used in the creation, production, and performance of music.

I edited and published books on a variety of subjects related to technology and media creation.

I have collaborated on special projects, such as this one-shot magazine co-published with Electronic Musician magazine.

I was the editor of Writer's Market for three editions and the supervising editor for three more. I also directed the creation of the first electronic version of Writer's Market, the 1997 edition.

Though most of my career has been spent in technology and reference, I have acquired and edited books in many subject areas.

Aside from my work as an editor, and in addition to my commercial copywriting, I write books and articles on various nonfiction topics.

Stylized: A Slightly Obsessive History of Strunk & White's The Elements of Style was published by Simon & Schuster in 2009, the fiftieth anniversary of this classic guide for writers.

Come Together: The Official John Lennon Educational Tour Bus Guide to Music and Video, published by Thomson in 2006. Foreword by Yoko Ono Lennon.

Searching for Mary was published by Penguin in 1998. In 2001, it was republished by Emmis Books as Waiting for Mary.

My feature writing in The Oxford American was cited in Best American Travel Writing, 2000.

I have published features, essays, opinion, and service articles in a variety of periodicals.
